Life is present in all corners of Marino Ballena National Park: dolfins, seabirds, fish, whales, starfish, molluscs, crabs, sponges…. In its waters have been observed 18 species of corals, and 70 species of reef fish (both deep and shallow).
These reefs and reef communities are subject to a series of environmental problems including the heating of the water by the El Niņo phenomenon, sedimentation, and high rainfall amounts. This park protects sandy beaches, gravel beaches, bluffs, islands, rocky reefs and organic reefs, etc.
We work with Costa Rican and international volunteers in the conservation of the riches of Marino Ballena National Park. We work with the park rangers to assure the maintenance of habitats critical to the reproduction and egg-laying of many marine species, and we preserve the productivity of the biological communities that inhabit the coastal zone. The volunteers maintain trails, and clean and protect the camping areas. They maintain the infrastructure to support the labor of the officials responsible for the area. They also provide customer service and pay monitor tourist activities in the area.
