The teaching of English as a foreign language is important in a country where international tourism is the principal source of foreign revenue. This is especially necessary for that part of the population that is directly involved in the tourism trade. With the English Teaching Project, in rural communities near protected areas we have begun a program of training in English as a Second Language.
We work with children in the communities of Montezuma, Las Delicias and Cabuya, on the Nicoya Peninsula, in the province of Puntarenas. The three communities are substantially different. Montezuma is a tourist area where many services are found. Las Delicias and Cabuya are small rural communities, surrounded by forests, whose inhabitants are involved in agricultural efforts that will lead to a sustainable agricultural economy.
We work with international volunteers to support the schools of these communities in teaching English, principally to students in the first and second grades. The volunteers teach English, prepare English-language educational materials, and help the teachers. The volunteers also participate in the Conservation Project at Romelia Mixed Wildlife Reserve.
